WELDING ENGINEER

BIG LAKE, MN
Position Summary:

This engineering position is responsible for developing and maintaining efficient procedures for assigned parts with a primary focus on welding processes at our Big Lake and New Brighton facilities.  This position will be responsible for all aspects of welding engineering for the facility with an approximate equal focus on friction stir welding of aluminum and arc welding of aluminum, and steel alloys.  Welding is predominantly conducted to industry codes and customer specifications.  The welding engineer will be responsible for the development of welding procedures to these requirements and ensuring code compliance during manufacturing.  Ability to work comfortably with the management team, engineering, customers, and shop floor personnel will be critical to meet the requirements of this position.  This position will require the ability to lead welding development with a hands-on approach working closely with shop floor personnel.  Additionally, this position will provide technical support to Manufacturing Engineering, Program Management, Estimating, Operations, Quality, and NC Programming.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Support shop floor engineering activity.  Work closely with welders to develop procedures and ensure successful implementation and compliance during manufacturing.  Develop WPSs and PQRs meeting code and specification requirements.  Qualify procedures and operators.  Maintain cost effective processes.
Implement, manage, and maintain a system that retains appropriate documentation related to projects and processes including Weld Maps, WPS, PQR, and welder qualification records.  Collaborate with the quality department to ensure compliance to code requirements for both procedures and personnel.  Maintain welder continuity to ensure qualifications are current.  Lead customer weld audits.
Assist Program Management and Estimating by providing information on the technical aspects and risks of projects.  Evaluate manufacturability to ensure appropriate bids are submitted on quoted projects.  Provide on-going technical support throughout the duration of assigned projects.          
Develop recommendations for equipment, fixtures, and welding tools needed to successfully complete complex steel, and aluminum fabrications.
Drive the continued development and documentation of the friction stir weld process.
Identify continuous improvement opportunities and support efforts to implement LEAN principles throughout the organization.   
Facilitate the training and skill development of welders.
 
Qualifications
 
Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related engineering field. 
Minimum five years relevant experience in the process development, design of fixtures, and production of complex welded fabrications.
Minimum two years of on the job welding engineering experience.Minimum two years with FSW process including weld tooling design and techniques to mitigate weld defects.
Minimum two years with CAD systems utilizing solid modeling.
Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position;
This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status. ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
Preferred Qualifications:     

Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
Demonstrated expertise with:
Friction Stir Welding (AWS D17.3).
Aluminum, and steel welding.
LEAN / Six Sigma training and demonstrated application.
Intermediate experience utilizing an ERP system.
Ability to determine the nature of problems in processes.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
Experience working within an ISO environment.
Proficient PC skills in a Windows environment.
Experience with CAD software like Solid Works, CATIA or other.
Experience with process capability studies.
Experience with special processes i.e., plating, heat treat, shot blast, etc.
