Staff Mechanical Engineer - A Brief Overview
  • This is a hands-on instrumentation design and development position ideally suited for the hardware engineer who enjoys designing, building, testing, and debugging complex state-of-the-art optical instruments, specifically flow cytometer cell analysis systems.
  • The ideal candidate is a self-starter who can work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
What you will do
  • Research, development, and design of fluidic and mechanical systems and components related to existing and new product development, creating documentation, i.e., drawings, BOM’s, ECO’s etc., as required, supporting Manufacturing, Field Service, Customer Service, and other departments with respect to existing products, designing opto-mechanical and mechanical assemblies, and creating models and analysis using 2D or 3D CAD packages.
  • Strives to make continuous quality improvements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree science or engineering degree and at least 6 years of experience in complex optical instrument development required.

Experience Qualifications
  • Experience with laser instrumentation preferred.
  • Direct experience in flow cytometry is a definite advantage preferred.
  • Must have sufficient technical education and/or experience to quickly become familiar with the architecture and operation of our current production instruments, along with instrument control and data analysis software to establish an in-depth understanding of the technology. Will then apply this understanding to the ongoing support of Manufacturing and Field Service of existing products and build on this understanding in the development of next generation cell analysis instrumentation for both research and clinical applications preferred.
  • Familiarity with solid modelling CAD software drawing specification and tolerancing preferred.
  • Experience in assembly, alignment and testing and trouble-shooting of complex optical, mechanical and motion control systems preferred.

  • Strong analytical skills with sound decision making and complex problem-solving ability.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to evaluate and refine performance and resolve issues in complex instrumentation involving interactions between hardware, electronics, and instrument control software.
  • Strong skills with sound decision making and problem-solving ability. 
  • The ideal candidate will be comfortable acting as a senior advisor and mentor within the R&D team.
  • Ability to translate written product specifications into functional product designs.
  • Good organizational skills, including the ability to be flexible to changing priorities and needs, attention to detail and accuracy, combined with proven ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to perform experiments autonomously, as well as with cross-functional team members.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications as well as MS Project software required.
  • Where applicable according to job responsibilities, one or more of the following competency criteria will be required from the Hardware Research and Development personnel:
  • Familiarity with the current versions of applicable company policies and procedures 
  • Familiarity with the company’s document control system 
  • Planning and scheduling skills for ensuring documents and drawings are reviewed and approved in a timeline consistent with project goals
