Performs a wide menu of tests related to patient care, verifies results and reports these within the policy and procedure criteria set within the department. Has direct and immediate responsibility for own work and in those instances in which the Clinical Laboratory Scientist works alone, he or she is considered the department supervisor at the moment.
Performs test and control procedures in a timely manner.
Prioritizes and organizes testing workload and performs all designated tests.
Recognizes and verifies statistical and technical variances, QC results, critical values, normal and abnormal patient values prior to release of testing results.
Reads the results of tests and examinations and interprets them in terms of quality, takes into consideration the age of patient when this affects the process of testing, the normal ranges or quality results.
Records and communicates values outside established normal range to supervisor and/or other appropriate personnel.
Assists with maintenance of reagents, supplies, and instrumentation; may be responsible for making up reagents, and maintenance and adjustment of equipment; performs or oversees instrument function checks and maintenance procedures and repairs department protocols; assists in evaluation and implementation of new instrument and procedures.
Assists in developing quality standards and quality controls to assure the accuracy in tests' results; documents all appropriate corrective actions, maintenance procedures, QC and QA data and actions taken.
Assists in training and orientating of new department personnel and evaluating their performances.
Interacts with nursing and medical staff as necessary to clarify orders, discuss results and deal with operational problems.
Performs phlebotomy procedures in accordance with the policies and procedures outlined in the phlebotomy manual, including infant, pediatric, adult and geriatric phlebotomy as needed.
Uses rigid accuracy in the identification of each patient sample by name, specimen number, specimen type or source, collection date and time.
Interacts with nursing and medical staff as necessary to clarify orders, discuss results and deal with any problems affecting patient management.
Excellent oral and written communications skills
Minimum Position Qualifications:
Associates Degree in Laboratory Science and/ or ;
Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology
One year internship - prerequisite to the State Exam
License/Certification: Current California license for Clinical Laboratory Scientist
Preferred Position Qualifications:
Experience: Two years experience in a hospital setting
