Laboratory Technician (Bacterial)-Animal Manipulations

Job Description : Laboratory Technician to work within the Bacterial Division on our United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) contract at Fort Detrick, Maryland.


Contractor shall perform routine immunological, microbiological, and molecular biological techniques, to include polymerase chain reaction (PCR), restriction enzyme digests, agarose gel electrophoresis, cloning, and isolation of DNA and RNA from bacterial cells.
Contractor shall perform microbiological tasks with viable Bacillus anthracis spores and cells, Yersinia pestis, Burkholderia mallei, Burkholderia pseudomallei, and Francisella tularensis in a BSL-3 or BSL-4 containment suite. Must determine the viability of suspensions of B. anthracis cells or spores and other organisms by plating onto nutrient agar media. Must be able to prepare and sterilize bacteriological media, reagents, and laboratory supplies. Must be able to prepare tissue cultures from animal cells.
Contractor shall support animal studies and participate in aerosol challenge of various species of lab animals with anthrax spores or viable cultures of other agents.
Contractor shall prepare antibiotics and vaccines for administration to animals in support of therapeutic experiments.
Contractor shall collect animal body fluids and administer drugs and vaccines orally (PO) and by intraparetoneal (IP), intramuscular (IM), and subcutaneous (SC) injections.
Contractor shall be able to receive the necessary vaccinations against anthrax, smallpox, and other disease-causing agents as needed.
Contractor shall maintain necessary levels of documented training for working with laboratory animals, to include GLP studies.
Contractor shall perform animal health exams to ensure studies remain in compliance with IACUC approved protocols.
Contractor shall be able to perform various laboratory tasks while wearing personal protective equipment, to include Tyvek suite, double gloves, and PAPR.
Contractor shall work in close coordination with other government contractors and government employees in studies of B. anthracis, Y. pestis, B. mallei, B. pseudomallei, and F. tularensis therapeutics and vaccines to bacterial diseases.
Contractor shall be able to work independently with only broad guidance.
Contractor shall be able to train incoming personnel, to include both peers and superiors.
Contractor shall be able to properly, safely, and securely handle confidential, experimental compounds belonging to client companies.
Maintain a safe workplace ensuring that he/she is aware of and observes appropriate safety and occupational health rules and regulations. Employee is required to attend safety training relative to his/her position and report any infractions of safety procedures to the facility Safety Officer.
The contract employee must complete mandatory Federal, DoD, Army, and USAMRIID trainings as required.
Enrollment in Biosurety Personnel Reliability program (BPRP) required.
May require variable work schedules and occasional weekends in order to accomplish time sensitive laboratory tasks.
Bio-safety Level 2 and Bio-safety Level 3 (BSL 2/3) required.
In order to safely carry out the laboratory research mission, certain FDA licensed vaccines will be required to be taken.


Bachelor's degree and 5 years’ experience.
Experience in high performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectroscopy (HPLC-MS).
Experience in animal manipulations.
Contractor shall have experience with in vitro antibiotic susceptibility assay systems and be able to perform pharmacokinetic (PK) determinations on antibiotics from various animal species.
Contractor shall possess knowledge of animal study design, including developing therapeutic treatment plans, dosing schedule, number of animals required, supplies required, and facilities needed if given a desired study endpoint. The Contractor shall possess some basic knowledge of animal physiology and be able to predict if client requested treatment protocols are viable.
Contractor shall be familiar with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), mass spectroscopy (MS), minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and other antibiotic determination methods from animal serum and tissues.
Contractor shall have experience in operating an HPLC/Mass Spec instrument, to include development of qualitative and quantitative assays for various antibiotic classes.
Contractor shall be able to prepare biological samples for assay of antibiotics and be able to prepare reagents and solvents for HPLC separations.
Must obtain and maintain enrollment in the Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP) for handling select agents.Applicants must meet eligibility requirements as regulated by Army Regulation 50-1 (AR 50-1)
